Email isn’t dead, it gets the job done. Be it work-related, offers related, events related or promotion-related, we use email to build an authentic connection with the humans that keeps our businesses alive. Yet, there's an issue that all email marketers and advertisers must battle with and that is falling into the dreaded black hole that is the “spam folder”. Perfectly, your emails should go straight to the recipient’s inbox, so what’s putting your messages in the spam folder? Hey. You forgot something! Know what “Spam Folder” is A spam folder is the default place for your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) to store unwanted emails as determined by its spam filter. If the email exceeds a certain threshold, it's filtered to the spam folder. This spam folder is known as a “junk mailbox” or “junk folder” and is created by mail servers. Get Ready! To understand some reasons why your email might be landing in a spam folder: Your originating domain address might be wrong One of the first reasons can be that the routing of information — the domain name used in your 'From' email address should ideally already have a good email sending history. This also applies to domain names used in the links contained within your emails. Don’t Forget! A person or business who has initiated the message needs to verify the domain address before sending it. You don’t have permission to email recipients It's’ not recommended to manually add emails that you find off of business cards. Recipients need to give you permission to email them. You may and you should! Before starting the email campaign, always write a personal mail or separate email asking for permission. Your IP Address was marked for spam Having a bad IP reputation, email servers might mark your IP address as negative which might lead you with certain consequences of your emails landing in spam. Sharing an IP address would always be a drawback, as anyone can easily use your IP to send spam emails. Avoid it! It is always advisable never to use an unreliable email service provider for your email campaigns. You might be using spam trigger words Spam filters are triggered by certain words in your content that you're sending over emails and determine if it falls under the spam category. Some examples include - “Click here” or “Increase sales!!” SPAM Check! To avoid getting your email redirected to spam folders, check your email for spam trigger words before sending it. Your engagement rates could be low The content further determines if recipients are opening the emails or just avoiding them. Engagement rates often determine if the emails are going to the inbox or spam folder. So, if you have fewer engagements, your email has a higher risk of flagged as spam. Be authentic and real in your subject lines too. NOTE! For high-converting engagements, have a fresh email content list and the subject line should be appropriate and delivered at the right time. Your subscribers have put you on the spam folder Another huge reason for emails going to spam is that your subscribers might have flagged your email address for spam. Well, it’s just because of the reason they don’t remember you. To avoid it! Make sure your branding is memorable and it matches your website. You’re not adding an unsubscribe link This is also one of the most triggering issues. Never send emails without an unsubscribe link, as it may cause difficulty which losses trust and forces email recipients to report emails as spam. Keep in Mind! It’s better to have more people unsubscribing the link rather than having your email report as spam. You’re sending emails to inactive recipients This is self-explanatory.
